Coherence is a measure of the pattern in the heart’s rhythm, which is independent of the amount of HRV, and reflects an orderly and harmonious synchronization among various systems in the body such as the heart, blood pressure rhythms and respiratory system.

Studies have show the “heart brain” is a real thing. You have probably heard about being in “a state of flow.” It might happen during a yoga or meditation class, or while cooking with your loved ones.

The flow state is the zone where our hearts, minds, and bodies are at one and we feel a deep connection with ourselves and others.

When we feel this connection, not only within ourselves but to our environment and even to our Mother Earth, we are actually being in coherence.

Heart Coherence And Stress

Scientific studies have shown that when we cultivate, intentionally or unintentionally, emotions of appreciation, love, and compassion (as opposed to anxiety, anger, or fear) the oscillations of our heart rhythm are showing as being more coherent or consistent. This coherence has been linked to a sense of well-being, as well as being more emotionally stable and reaching peak states of mindfulness.

Each one of us deals with stress differently, whether the stress is mental, emotional or social. This means that our heart coherence can fluctuate from moment to moment.

We all seek different ways to live more at ease. But what if we could train our hearts to be in coherence more often? What if we could entrain others in our journey to happiness just by being in a state of deep appreciation for life itself?

Scientists have found that the signals the heart continuously sends to the brain actually influence the function of higher brain centers involved in perception, cognition, and emotional processing.

Our hearts can also entrain the hearts of other people around us. Research illustrates our hearts actually respond and are connected to the oscillations of the earth frequencies. What does that mean? The heart is basically its own brain.

How Do You Practice Heart Coherence

You can use the Quick Coherence technique to bring your heart rhythms into coherence and enable your brain to synchronize with your heart’s coherent rhythm. Start by learning how to shift into a heart-focused, positive emotional state through three simple steps.

Quick Coherence Technique

  1. Heart Focus: Focus your attention in the area of your heart, in the center of your chest.
  2. Heart Breathing: As you focus on the area of your heart, imagine your breath flowing in and out through that area.
  3. Heart Feeling: As you continue to breathe through the area of your heart, recall a positive feeling, a time when you felt good inside, and try to re-experience it. It could be feeling appreciation for the good things in your life, or the love and care you feel for someone.

The next step is to take this technique and make it a habit. Do this by picking certain times of the day when you can give yourself a guilt-free three to five minutes to focus on your heart: Start of your day, right before lunch, just before bed.

Waiting in line is also a great time to use this technique instead of getting aggravated. You will be amazed at how different your experience of waiting can be.

Instead of draining your energy by focusing on the negative you are using the time to recharge. The more you practice, the more quickly heart coherence emerges and the easier it is to sustain.

Think about where else you can fit in a Quick Coherence moment. At a stop light? Right before lunch? Doing the dishes? There are many little opportunities throughout the day. It is now just a matter of doing it.

Remember that taking mini breaks to “get in coherence” can go a long way in helping you gain inner balance and save a lot of energy along the way.
